How Vitamin-C Helps Smokers?
***********************
Now studies have shown that smoking and Vitamin-C do not go hand in hand. It has been found in various studies that If you smoke more than twenty (20) cigarettes a day the serums levels of Vitamin-C drop alarmingly to less than 0.82 mg/dl, 95% CI : 0.77, 0.86; 46.6 mumol/L, 95% CI : 43.7, 48.8. While those who smoked in between 1 to 19 cigarettes a day, the serum levels of Vitamin-C were 0.97 mg/dl, 95% CI 0.92, 1.03; 55.1 mumol/L, 95% CI : 52.2, 58.5.
If we compare the Vitamin-C levels of non smokers than the serum levels were 1.15 mg/dl, 95% CI : 1.11, 1.18; 65.3 mumol/L, 95% CI : 63.0, 67.0
This clearly shows that more you smoke, and then more severe is loss of Vitamin-C in the body. Thus cigarette smoking not only harms body but also make it hard for the body to repair itself.
Another Study have found that Vitamin-C helps in absorption of Vitamin-E too, thus helps keep skin healthy as Vitamin-E is supposed to fight aging of skin and fight wrinkles thus giving young looks.
Now, I know it is very difficult to give up smoking, so what can be done to prevent this loss. My solution for the heavy smokers is it is best to give up tobacco use to avoid not only Vitamin-C loss but also avoid heart and respiratory problems along with increased risk of cancers. But If you cannot give up smoking then please increase your daily intake of Vitamin-C to protect your body. It won't protect your body from harmful effects of smoking but Vitamin-C would definitely help increase immunity and repairing capacity of your body. I have given a list of very easily available fruits in start of this article which have abundant quantities of Vitamin-C. Also Vitamin-C tablets are very cheap (about 50 cents for 10 tabs in India) and are easily available as OTC Drug (over the counter drug i.e. you do not need any doctor's prescription to buy it).
So, Friends please if you cannot stop or quit smoking then increase your daily intake of Vitamin-C
